Mattie B, Liggans was born on October 17, 1917 to the late George and Hannah Selmon Blakely in Collierville, Tenn. She was the 7th of eight sibling. Mattie accepted Christ at early age, and joined Watts Chapel A.M.E. Church of Bindsong, AR; where she was baptized by the late Rev. Craft. After retiring from General Motors in Flint, MI; she relocated to Lakeview, AR; in 1976 where she united with the First Baptist MBC of Lakeview, AR; under the leadership of the late Rev. Freddy Hall. She serves faithfully for 43 years. Her influence at Church will live on in the lives of those she taught. She was the President of the mission, a member of the senior choir, served on the usher board as secretary of the church building fund. In addition Mattie was a member of the Lakeview Ladies Fire Auxiliary Board of Directors and Mid Delta Community Services She served faithfully for many years in the Phillips, Lee, Monroe, Deshae District Association (PLM&D District). For one these years she served as President for the women and young people department. Mattie was a member of the Wabash No. 345 Eastern Star. Mattie stood firmly on the truth found in Psalms 73: 24-25 “Though shall guide me with Your counsel, and afterwards receive me to glory. Whom have I in glory but thee? And there is none upon the earth that I desire beside thee.” Mattie is preceded in death by her husband Louis Liggans, One adopted son, James Louis Liggans, both of her parents George & Hannah Blakely. Four sister Eliza Scales, Mary Ida Baker, Elizabeth King, and Lucenda Powell, Three brothers Odie Lee, Cleazel and George Blakely. She leaves to cherish her memories: Her faithful nieces: Viola Watson of Elaine, AR; Ruthie Mae Echols of Dave City, FL; Loistean Coy (Precious) of St. Louis, MO; Mildred A. Donley (Peaches) of West Memphis, TN Ruby Blakey of Davison, MI, Linda (Johnny) Dorsey of West Memphis, AR; and Yvonne (Peter) Dumas. Nine Nephews, James (Mary) Blakely, Joe (Clara) Blakely, George Jr., Chris, Victor (Deena) Blakely all of Flint, MI; George (Eulane), Joecephus (Shirley) Charles (Martha) Williams, and Lee Edwards Blakely all of West Memphis, AR; Vincent (Adaline) Blakely of Memphis TN; and Odie Blakely of Harrisonville, MO; One God Daughter Mattie Laverne (Frank) Dixon of Memphis, TN; A devoted great niece Doreatha, Watson Cole, and One sister in law Christine Blakely. A long time faithful neighbor Mildred Scales, and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly. Many people look upon death as a sad occasion, but the death of a Christian is a glorious time, for our Lord and Savior has said so. Psalms 116:15 say Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of a Saint.
